Amazon Jungle Bushcraft Expedition – August 2021
The Ultimate Jungle Experience!!!
(Dates are Tentative) Arrival to Leticia August 20th – Depart Leticia August 31st
Join us for one of the most unique wilderness adventures on the planet! Indigenous men and women from remote regions of the Amazon will be our teachers and the jungle will be our classroom.
What and Where: Leticia, Colombia, right at the tri-corners of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. The main income is tourism, and it’s an EXTREMELY SAFE AREA. The jungle that we travel in is very safe as well.
To fly there, you normally have to go through Bogota. We can help coordinate flights that minimize the layover here. You will need to be in Leticia before noon August 21st. Look for round trip flights between $500 and $900. We are happy to help you book your flight!
Arrive in Leticia and stay in a beautiful open air hut for the first night. We will go out on a night hike to look or sloths, snakes, electric eels and more. In the morning we will procure any equipment we need and check packs. We will travel along the Amazon and Javari rivers before a hike through the jungle to Uaco. This place is amazing, has no electricity, and helps everyone to get acclimated to the jungle.
From there, we go into the deep jungle for a 7 day overnight trip. The expedition is not backpacking based, but we do go through some sloppy swamps sometimes or have to cross rivers when going to search for our campsites. We go out on hunting trips to watch and learn from our indigenous guides, night hikes, and some day hikes. These are generally with little more than water or a day pack. We then return back to the campsite.
Each day we focus on making blowguns, bows, traps, and during the day we send groups of two out with the Matis to spot and stalk monkeys, maybe grabbing one for a meal with their 12 foot blowguns. Lots of fishing, fish traps, and fish spearing. We also take fish and other game with machetes and slingshots. We’ve eaten everything from Tree frogs to 70lb caiman.
This is a bushcraft expedition and cultural immersion. It is not a hunting safari or tough man/woman competition but participants should be in good physical health. Exercises in balance and cardio training prior to the trip will come in handy. If you want a more rigorous trip, we can send you out with Alberto monkey hunting at “his pace” or you can try an overnight solo in the jungle. You will be bushwhacked but it’s a lot of fun. We have the ability to really customize this trip to suite your curiosities.
On the last day we return from the jungle we get to go shopping in Leticia, and go out on the Amazon river where we will be able to fish, pet monkeys, and do some other more “normal” stuff.
A full gear list will be provided to you for this trip. In summary, you’ll need dry bags, small fishing kit, mosquito repellent, a good backpack with a waterproof liner, quick drying clothes, rubber boots, toiletries, camping cup and bowl, a good compass, hammock, headlight, and flashlight. We have loaner equipment of all types if you need it.
We work with representatives from 3 tribes
- Yucuna:Alberto (aka Beastmode Bushcraft as we call him) is a great teacher and hunter. He will teach us how to make traps, baskets, backpacks, blowguns, and all sorts of other items using only a machete
- Matis: These indigenous were first contacted in the 1980s. We have 1 to 2 members join us to for our time in the jungle and teach us hunting skills, survival skills, crafts, and insights from their culture. This a very unique and rare opportunity to learn directly from a tribe who has no modern or written language.
- Huitoto: Our cook, Blanca, shows us how to prepare various meals from the bush, how to weave cordage, and everything else in between.
