4 Day Mini Snowshoe Expedition: Upper Michigan

January 15 @ 1:00 pm - January 18 @ 1:00 pm

$650

If you absolutely love the snow, cold and everything winter, you’re our kind of people! It’s tough to beat the deep snow and pristine wilderness of Upper Michigan. Join us for the first snowshoe trip of the season. This trip balances traditional winter trekking with wilderness skill building, great food, and still leaves plenty of time to kick back and relax.

As with all of our trips, this is a great opportunity to really hone your winter skills and gain solid experience in deep snow country. We will work as a team to accomplish daily camp chores of processing firewood, water, camp set-up, meals, etc.

This trip is extremely limited. Only 7 spots available! Previous winter camping experience is recommended but not required. Please contact us at Info@nowoutdoors.org with any questions you may have.

This is a traditional winter camping trip and we will travel over lakes and land by snowshoe pulling everything behind us (by our own power) on modern toboggans ideal for gliding over deep snow. Absolutely nothing is carried on our backs. At night we sleep in a canvas tent on a bed of boughs (environment permitting). We warm the tent, cook fantastic meals, and dry our clothes by the heat of a wood stove. Even if it’s -30F degrees outside, we can relax in amazing comfort inside the tent!

The Plan:
>Day 1. We will all meet Friday, January 15th at the put-in at 1pm. We will take about an hour to check gear and load up the toboggans before heading out to the frozen waterways. We will travel roughly 1 hour and set up camp.
>Day 2. After breakfast, we will break camp and load up the sleds once again. It’s a 6-mile trek (based on conditions) towing toboggans. We will travel over several lakes and a few portage trails before reaching our spot to set up camp. We will stay here for 2 nights enjoying the beautiful landscape, deep snow, and fantastic ice fishing opportunities if you wish.
>Day 3: Rest Day
>Day 4: We will eat early and break camp, load up and head out. The hike out will be roughly 1 mile. We typically stop for lunch nearby but it’s hard to tell what will be open at this time.

NOW Outdoors has a reputation for fantastic food in the backcountry and this trip is no different.
>>If you have any specific dietary restrictions, please let me know well in advance so I can make accommodations. 🙂

Difficulty: Moderate. A great attitude and uncommon excitement for extreme cold is required for this trip. A keen sense of adventure and flexibility is of the utmost importance. We will be hauling toboggans for several hours on day 2 and snowshoeing can be a challenge at first. Cardio and leg strength training would be worth adding to your daily routine if not already there. Temperatures could very well range from -40F to +30F. Plan to be outside most of the time. You will need to ensure you have the appropriate gear.
