Backpacker Skill Building Weekend – Includes Meals and more

This workshop is for beginner backpackers and campers who want to expand their knowledge base to get out farther, longer, and safer. Join us for presentations on map and compass navigation, loading a backpack, hanging a bear bag, ultra-light camp cooking, and more!
We will be staying on 40 private acres at our NOW Outdoors basecamp in Waupaca, WI just west of Hartman Creek State Park. Arrive at 10am Saturday and hike down to the site (5-minute walk from your car on a clear wide path). Upon arrival, we’ll help you find a place to set up your tent or hammock. Lunch will be served at noon Saturday. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will also be provided.
Throughout the day, various topics and hands-on skills will be presented including:
• Map and compass navigation
• Fire building
• Leave No Trace principles
• Loading and adjusting a backpack
• Hanging a bear bag
• Clothing and footwear
• Hammock vs tent
• Camp cooking and water purification
Meals – Saturday lunch – Sunday breakfast
Coffee and snacks
Misc. group gear (tables, kitchen equipment)
First aid kit
Presentations and materials (packs, compasses, etc.)
Tons of great campfire stories 🙂
Personal items such as clothing, tent, sleeping bag

Meet your Guide:
Nick Gordon, Wilderness EMT, is the owner of NOW Outdoors. He is an experienced guide on both land and water in all conditions locally and abroad. He teaches adventure recreation at UW-Milwaukee and certification courses for the SOLO School of Wilderness Medicine. Since 2010, Nick has been helping people gain more skills, more knowledge, and more confidence outdoors throughout the Midwest and abroad including Nepal, Canada, Cambodia, Peru, Brazil, and deep in the Amazon Jungle.
